They
said it couldn’t be done!
Private music teachers, university instructors, and
conservatory instructors all agreed – teaching piano
performance and advanced musical concepts such as the circle
of fifths, transposition, and composition, to children as
young as three years old was not a sensible thing to do.
Children of that age could not master such manually
difficult and theoretically obscure things.
Music for Young Children thinks otherwise.
Started in 1980 in Canada, Music for Young Children faced
skepticism from all except those courageous to try the
program. In May of 1980 there were 40 students.
In 2006, there were more than 24,000 Music for Young
Children students, of whom 12,503 (including three and four
year olds) entered the MYC International Composition
Festival. |
